- 23 Ocak 1913... İttihat ve Terakki'nin iktidarını pekiştiren Babıali Baskını'nın ertesinde, yeni sadrazam, Cemal Paşa'yı başkentin asayişini sağlaması için İstanbul Muhafızı olarak görevlendirir. Cemal Paşa, 1919'da yazdığı anılarını, memleketin umumi siyasetinde doğrudan doğruya etkili olmaya başladığı bu andan itibaren başlatmıştır. Hatıralar imparatorluğu yöneten üç büyük paşanın arasındaki hassas dengelere dair ipuçları sunarken, Cemal Paşa'nın baş aktörü olduğu pek çok tarihi olayı ilk ağızdan anlatıyor: Fransızlar ve Almanlarla ittifak çabaları, nüfus mübadelesi düşüncesinin doğuşu, I. Dünya Savaşı'na giriş, Gazze savunması, Arap isyanı, Suriye ve Filistin'in işgali... Cemal Paşa (1872-1922) 1895'te Harp Akademileri'ni bitirerek orduya katıldı. 1899'da Selanik'te, geleceğin Talat Paşa'sı ile birlikte İttihat ve Terakki'nin temellerini attı. Meşrutiyet'in ilanında İstanbul'a giden İttihat ve Terakki heyetine katıldı. 1909'da Adana valisi oldu. Balkan Savaşı'nda cephede görev yaptı. 1913'te kurulan İttihat ve Terakki hükümetinde, önce İstanbul Muhafızı, ardından da nafia (bayındırlık) ve bahriye nazırı oldu. Osmanlı-Fransız ittifakı için yaptığı girişimler sonuçsuz kaldı. I. Dünya Savaşı'nda Suriye ve Filistin'in güvenliğini sağlamak için yörede görevlendirildi. Onun komutası altında Mısır'ın işgali için düzenlenen Kanal Harekatları sonuçsuz kaldı. Yörenin İngiliz ve Fransız işgaline uğraması üzerine görevden alındı. Mondros Mütarekesi'nin ardından hükümet ve parti arkadaşlarıyla birlikte ülkeden ayrıldı. Almanya üzerinden, İngilizlerle mücadelede destek vermek üzere Afganistan'a geçti. Yöredeki dengelerin değişmesi üzerine Tiflis'e gitti. Burada Anadolu'ya geçmek için çalışırken, 21 Temmuz 1922'de iki Ermeni komitacının düzenlediği suikastte hayatını kaybetti; Erzurum'da Karskapısı Şehitliği'ne defnedildi. Daha fazla göster
